Shawn Ashmore talks about Iceman and X-Men 2
- Mike Cotton
A year ago, Shawn Ashmore wasn't even sure he'd be invited back for the second installment of the
X-Men film franchise.
According to the 24-year-old actor, who plays Bobby Drake/Iceman in X-Men 2, he thought he might be
seeing the film in theaters rather than being on set with his cast mates.
"Bobby actually got an extended role in this one, which is really cool," says Ashmore (Cadet Kelly).
"After the first one, it was kind of touch-and-go. The relationships were established but there was no
evidence that Bobby would be back. But they like the character, and it turned out that they actually
decided to up his part."
As fans of the first X-Men film will remember, Rogue, played by Anna Paquin (The Piano), and Ashmore's
Iceman developed an on-screen romance. The actor says fans can expect more of that, as well as more of
Iceman's powers, in X-Men 2.
"I don't want to give away too much but Bobby's kind of Rogue's protector in this movie and he's also
closer with Wolverine because of that," says Ashmore.
"I want people to see it on the big screen and I don't want to ruin it but there's definitely more of
a display of what Bobby can do it terms of his powers than the first film."
There's also a new love triangle in X-Men 2 with the addition of Aaron Stanford (Tadpole) as Pyro, a
pyrokinetic mutant also enrolled at Xavier's School.
"It's an interesting relationship," explains Ashmore. "There's this whole fire and ice thing with a
girl in the middle, so it's that kind of triangle. I think Pyro and Bobby are so different and as you
can imagine, boys will be boys."
